Marsden Brothers conducted a GOB sale for Meyers & Farrar Jewelers, Lubbock, TX for six weeks ending two days after Christmas, 2014. We were very pleased with the results. In addition, we sold almost all equipment, fixtures, chandelier, furniture, and jewelry equipment.


The staff was experienced and professional and the advertising brought huge crowds of new customers. On the giveaway promotions, we had people with chairs sitting outside the door from 7:30 am for a noon event. Even with the local economic recession, the flow of customers was steady all day long almost every day; the exception was snow days and days of single digit temps.


Marsden Brothers augmented our selection of inventory to fill in our lack of lower priced goods. Without the augmented inventory, our sales would have been $200,000 less. The vendors that supplied the augmented inventory furnished quality goods and fair prices. Our total gross profit with our inventory and the augmented inventory was 45%. This covered all expenses and we made a very nice gross profit on the total sale.


The Marsden Brothers consultant was a Graduate Gemologist and sold right along with the staff. She was patient with some of our very particular customers. We all had many laughs about the way we handled indecisive customers, and then celebrated making the sale after lots of time spent.


Linda and I would use Marsden Brothers Promotions again if we were ever in need of a store closing sale. They were ethical and made sure we sold our merchandise first before any augmented goods.

I was dead wrong! They said we would have a line out the door and we did. I mean a really big line! They said we needed 4 people to ring up the sales and 12 to wait on the customers, and they were right, we needed them.


The first day I went home and did the math for the first 4 hours of our sale. We were ringing up at the rate of $550 per minute! This was fantastic! Then they sent a special letter. Oh my word, that really brought the people in. Talk about fun, and how much the customers loved it. Really, I can't say enough about how great this experience was for us.


Oh and did I mention the support staff they sent along? Mike and Lynn couldn't do enough to support and help us in any way possible.... I mean we really needed a therapist on staff with emotions running high. Honestly the going out of business sale was a huge success and I know we could not have done this on our own! We questioned the recommendation to have 20-25 people on hand to work the opening days. During those days even with 22 sales associates working, we had shoulder to shoulder and wall to wall shoppers. Our preview night sale had people lined up down the block and around the corner waiting to get in the store. Our opening to the public sale the following day was the same. WOW! Then, as now, the Sales Directors from Marsden Brothers have been top notch. Our employees thoroughly enjoyed working along side the Sales Director during our sale.


In our initial discussion with Cliff and Dennis, we were told that we had the potential of doing numbers comparable to our record previous year of business, during a 6 week sale with Marsden Brothers. While this prediction sure made us feel good, we still wondered, "Really?".


The 6 week sale resulted in us posting sales numbers much higher than our best ever year of sales and exceeded even the Marsden Brothers' predictions. There is no way we could have pulled this off, on our own, anywhere near as successfully as Marsden Brothers helped us do.

Shortly after I was notified of the bank's decision to close the business down, the liquidators began swarming like flies. Having been in the jewelry industry for over 30 years I thought I had seen it all, but the self-serving greed of the bank and some of the liquidators surprised even me. During the court proceedings, there were surprise appearances by attorneys representing liquidators from the east coast and the south. None of them were looking for anything but to maximize their commission.


I had met Cliff Marsden on multiple occasions over the years and he knew exactly what the bank would do after the owner passed away. What they told us they would do and the results we would get I wasn't sure anyone could do. Unfortunately, his prediction of the bank's action was correct. Cliff offered the services of Marsden Brothers Promotions to conduct the GOB sale under court supervision. He had to overcome the objections of the other liquidators and he proved to the court that Marsden Brothers had the best plan for winding down the business.


I had many detailed conversations with Cliff, Joe and Dennis and despite the angst of the situation, they conducted themselves with tremendous professionalism and integrity. Marsden Brothers spent great deal of time studying our market and discussed multiple strategies for maximizing the outcome of our sale.


During the preparation for the sale, there was excellent communication with Marsden Brothers staff and they met every deadline. During the sale, our Sale Director was very knowledgeable and cooperative. She worked well with management and staff in the store.


We had a very good outcome of the sale, despite the extremely depressed local economy (unemployment rate of 22%). In my 35 years in the jewelry industry, I have dealt with several companies who specialize in conducting sales for various reasons, but none have shown the kind of integrity as Marsden Brothers Promotions. My loving parents started Jenkins Jewelry in 1946. I continued in the family business until it was time for me to retire. I decided to retire a few weeks before calling Marsden Brothers Promotions. My sweet wife, Cindy, who had been my best friend and business partner for nearly 40 years, lost her two and a half year battle with cancer in 2011. Though my heart wasn't in it anymore I continued on for another four years with my terrific son, Corey, and we did very well.


I started researching businesses that specialized in going out of business sales and my brother, David, who has been in the wholesale jewelry trade for forty years, made some inquiries and the name Marsden Brothers kept coming up. The reviews were always good too. So I had David call Cliff Marsden. A few days later, Cliff called me. After several calls and a visit from Cliff I was sold on their concept and the strategy he outlined. And I found Cliff to be pretty okay too.


Over time I ended up talking to all of the Marsden Brothers and several of their great staff members. All of them were committed to making my retirement sale a great success. Working with MBP was a very pleasant experience and there was never an issue that they didn't immediately resolve to my satisfaction.


My sales results started a little slowly due to my poor customer mailing list but then the MBP advertising campaign kicked into gear. That drew in so many people we weren't sure there would be enough time in the day to ring them all up. Way cool!


The final day of my fabulous sale was a mixed bag of joy and sadness. But looking at my bank balance made it very good! Joe Marsden carried me all the way through and we made a good team, determined to have big results. I think it turned out to be even bigger than he imagined it would be. After having been informed that we would need to hire an additional dozen people or so, and that the opening night and first weekend of the sale would result in the store being full of customers, our skepticism grew. We would look at each other and just shake our heads. Hire how many people? No way! Customers standing outside waiting to get in the door? Right! And what did you say our potential volume would be? We would have to see that to believe it. After calling one particular reference who was also initially skeptical, and hearing she was extremely pleased with the success of her sale, we signed with Marsden Brothers.

I had known about the Marsden's from a RJO seminar Cliff Marsden presented three years earlier. I gave them a call and asked for some professional input. Cliff was going to be on the east coast about a week from our phone conversation and we set up a meeting. Cliff met with my wife and partner, Linda, and me for several hours and answered all of our many questions. He made some very helpful suggestions.


This was our one shot at a Going out of Business sale so I thought I should do some due diligence and called all the references Cliff had given me. Some of the store owners I called were now in their new locations after their moving sales and others that are now retired all said the same complimentary things. They told me that the Marsden's are honest people to have run your sale and they accomplish what they say they will. I called the Marsden's and made it official that they would be running our sale for the Christmas season of 2012.


The next step on the process was the prep work for the sale; how and where we would advertise, our merchandise that would be chosen to feature in the advertising, the radio spots and more. The Marsden Brothers office staff made it so easy and was a pleasure to work with.


From the minute our director got to our store for the sale setup we all were very confident that the sale would run smoothly and be a success. He organized our staff, which were not accustomed to GOB sales, and orchestrated our store to maximum efficiency. He was a true professional in the way he handled our staff and customers. He knew how to market our more sensitive brands such as Tacori, Kabana, Hidalgo, and Faberge'.


The goal from the start was to sell our merchandise at this sale, even though much of it was older and dated, and raise capital for the next project. Marsden Brothers Promotions helped us do just that. The sale was a success and we sold through more of our inventory in six weeks than we had in the previous two years!
